WHereas an vntrue and flaunderous reporte hath of late beene raysed by some euill disposed and malicious Persons against the Lord Mayor of this Cittie , as if by his meanes the price of graine that beganne to fall should be enhaunced to an higher rate , which vntrue report that it might haue some couller , it was likewise giuen out that his Lordship had brought into the Riuer of Thames from beyond the Seas certaine Corne , and to that ende kept vp the Market , that hee might sell his owne Graine at an higher rate : Whereas it is found that hee neuer vsed that trade of buying Corne either within this Realme or without ( saue onely so much as might serue for prouision of his owne householde ) but contrariwise hath endeuored to discharge his duetie on that behalfe by prouiding of Graine to bee brought hether out of Forraine parts , with as great prouidence as any other of his Predicessors heretofore haue done , whereby the great numbers of poore people within this Citie haue beene sustained this time of death : It hath pleased the Queenes most excellent Maiestie being truely informed of the great wrong done to his Lordship , by such an vntrue and slaunderous report being her Highnesse Liestenant within this Cittie , to giue order that publique notice bee made heereof in the open Markets , as well to testifie his Lordshippes innocencie , as to make knowne to her louing subiects how much her Highuesse is offended , and doth mislike such false reports deuised by malicious Persons aganist such Magistrates as vnder her Highnesse are appointed to supplie the place of publique gouernment . Giuing knowledge withall , that if any Person shall heereafter bee found to disperse this or any other vntrue reporte to the like effect , vppon information and complaint made to the Right Honourable the Lords and others of her Maiesties priuie Councell , some seuere punishment shall bee inflicted vpon such offendors , to the example of all others , who for priuate malice and without iust cause shall presume to defame any publique Person who shall bee appointed vnder her Maiestie for the good gouernment of her Highnesse people .
