AS I by chance was walking on a day , I spide a couple gathering of May ; And thus the young Man he began to woe her , and promised still he would be faithful to her . O come my Dear , and sit thée down by me , I do not question but we shall agree , If that unto me y●u will still be constant , Il be at your command at every instant . If thou wilt but yield for to be my Wife , then thou shalt live a sweet contented life : And this I tell thée without dissimulation , I fancy thee above all Girls in the Nation . The Maid . Is it for this you hither have me brought , I am not a Girl that s so easily caught ; For to hear your talk it makes my flesh to trembl●… for young Men now a dayes they can dissemble And this I know there is none of you all , but are given much to bring Maids to a down fall , They 'l speak them fair on purpose to deceive them , & when they have had their will then they will leave them . The Man . My dearest be not thou so cross to me , I vow and swear I fancy none but thee , I pray thee dearest be thou not so cruel , for I vow and swear that thou art my Iewel . Then speak my only joy now be kind to me , that thou and I may spéedily agree , Speak kindly to me now my dearest Nancy , I vow and swear thou art the Girl I fancy . The Maid . I know there be some young Men now a dayes , that highly will a Maidens beauty praise : But when a Maiden once do come to trust'um , then they 'l forsake them as it is their custom . Therefore , good Sir , I pray leave off your suite , for I do think that I shall never do 't ; Therefore , good Sir , I pray leave off your wooing , If I should yield it might prove my undoing , The Man . My only joy be not so unkind to me , for all my whole delight is still in thee , Then I pray thee Nancy speak thou kindly to me , or else I do protest thou wilt undo me . And this I tell thee now my hearts delight , I find no joy but when I am in thy sight : Then I pray thee dearest speak thee kindly to me , for I vow and swear that dearly I do love thee . The Maid , There be many young Men that deceitful are . which often times do bring Maids to despair , And cunningly they do us daily cosen , and make fools of poor Maidens by the dosen . Therefore I think we had need to have a care , and of uncivil young Men still for to beware , And not be overhasty to be married , for many a Girl by that she hath miscarried . The Man . know there be some young Men now a dayes , which oftentimes draw Maids out of their ways ; But I am none of those I tell thee plainly , to speak thee fair at first and then disdain the● . The Maid . If that I thought the words you speak were true , could find in my heart , me thinks , to fancy you : But yet there 's many young Men in this Nation , which often times bring Maids unto vexation . But now I am resolved to end the strife , and ever hereafter be thy constant Wife : Then I pray thee Willie be thou constant to me , for if thou falsifie thou wilt undo me . The Man . The young man hearing what the maid had told , to kiss her then he thought that he might be bold ; And so he told her how things should be carried . and that within a moneth they would be married . So to conclude and make no delay , but to the Church they ha●led both away : wish them peace and love and all things plenty and that between them there be nothing scanty .
