FORASMOCHE as nowe of late in outward parties beyond the sea , aswell in Flaunders as in Fraunce , the price of money and gold , not onely coyned in those countreis , but also gold of the kyng our soueraigne lordis coyne of this realme , is so enhaunced in the valuacion therof , that not onely straunge goldes , as crownes and ducates , but also the gold of this realme , as nobles halfe nobles and royals , by marchauntes aswell straun●●●●●●sortyng hyther , as the kynges subiectes repayryng into those parties , for the great gayne and lucre that they fynde therby , dayly be transported and caryed out of this realme , to the no lytell impoueryshyng therof , and fynally to the totall exhaustyng and drawyng out of all the coynes out of the same , oneles spedy remedy be prouided in that behalfe . And albeit the kynge our soueraygne lorde hath gyuen straite charge and commaundement , to all and singular his customers comptrollers and gardians of his portes , to put all suche good actes and statutes in execution , as heretofore haue ben made , for conseruyng of the kynges coyne within this his realme : Yet neuerthelesse , for the greatte gayne and aduauntage therof rysynge , by reason of the hygh price of money beyonde the sea , the kynges coyne is daylye by secrete meanes ( suche as can not be espied nor deprehended ) stille caried ouer . For these causes the kynge oure soueraygne lorde , tenderynge aboue all thynges the welthe and enrychynge of this his realme and people , and wyllynge to prouyde remedye herein , and that golde and coyne may remayne and be plentuousely broughte in to the same , and not caryed out in to outwarde parties , as of longe season , to the great detryment and impouerisshynge of his sayde realme , the same hathe bene , For the remedyinge whereof , there can be none other meanes and wayes studyed and deuysed , but onely a conue●●●nt enhauncement of the values of golde and syluer in this realme , whereby the same maye counteruayle the values and rates of the same in outwarde partes : Hath therfore , by the aduyse of his counsayle , resolued , that the vnce of fyne golde , of .xxiiii. carates , shall be from henseforth of the value of . xlviii.s . of lawfull money of this realme , and the vnce of the fynest sterlynge syluer , shall be of the value of .iiii. s . of the sayde laufull money of this realme of England . AND to the intent money and coyne may be the more plentifull in this realme , His maiestie therfore hath caused a pece of golde to be newly made , whiche his highnes wyll , shall be called the Soueraygne , and shal be currant for . xx.s . of the lawful money of this realme . ITEM an halfe soueraygne , whiche his maiestie wyll , shall be currant for . x.s . Item his maiestie wyll , that the royall of golde , beyng weyght , shall from henseforth be of the value of . xii.s . Item that the angell , being weight , shal be currant for . viii.s . The halfe angell for . iiii.s . and the quarter angell beyng also newely made for . ii.s .

AND his maiestie hath lykewyse caused to be newely made , certaine peeces of syluer , whiche his pleasure is shall be currant within this his gracis realme , after the rates hereafter specified . That is to saye , a peece called a Testurne , whiche shal be currant for . xii.d .

ITEM a grote with a hole face , whiche shal be currant for . iiii.d . an halfe grote of the same stampe , whiche shal be currant for . ii.d .

AND his maiestie is further pleased , that who so euer wyll bryng vnto his Mint , in the Towre of London , any golde coyned or vncoyned , of the fynesse aforesayd , shall receyue for the vnce of the same . xlviii.s . and for the vnce of syluer of the finesse aforesayd , iiii . s . And if the golde or syluer so brought thyther , be not found of the iuste fynesse aforsayd , the sayd bringers to allowe for the lacke therof , lyke as they shall be allowed for the betternesse therof , as the goodnes of the same shall requyre .

AND moreouer the kynges highnesse streightly chargeth and commandeth , that from hensforth all maner of grotes , halfe grotes , pence , halfe pence , and ferthynges of this coyne hauynge course , and beynge currant within this his sayde realme , not clypped nor fully broken , albeit they shal be moche cracked , to be taken receyued and payde throughout his sayd realme , without any maner refusell or denyall . Wherfore his highnes straightly chargeth and expressely commandeth , all Mayres , Iustyces of peace , shyryffes , baylyffes , constables , and other his faythfull officers and subiectes , that if any person or persons , of what estate degree or condition he or they be , refuse or deny to take or receyue the sayde monies of golde , beyng weight , or any of the monyes of syluer before expressed , or nowe curraunt in this realme , be it for marchaundises victualles chaunge or rechaunge , or other cause what soeuer : furthwith to take and arrest the same person or personnes , so makyng refusall or denyall , and to put hym or them in warde and pryson , there to remayne , and further to be punyshed at the kynges pleasure .

PROVIDED alwaye , that all suche summes of money as were due to the kynges maiestie , or to any other person , before the fyrst day of this present moneth of May , shall be payed after .vii. s . vi . d . the aungell , and so ratably , any thynge in this present proclamation to the contrary not withstandyng .
