WHereas the Right Honourable the Lord High Chancellor hath this Morning signified to this Court , That his Majesty takes notice and is displeased , that the Streets of this City are no better kept in Paving and Cleansing ; And that his Majesty expects that the same should for the future be better maintained ; This Court did now therefore resolve by all possible ways and means , to endeavour a thorough Reformation herein : And in regard it is the Scavengers duty in the Several Wards to see the Streets in their respective Precincts well paved and cleansed ; And also the Inquests of the several Wards are to take notice of , and present all defaults therein ; It is therefore ordered , That all the Scavengers within this City , and the Foreman of every Inquest , be warned to appear before this Court on Thursday next , as well to answer their Neglect herein for the time past , as to be admonished to a more careful performance of their duty for the future ; It being conceived by this Court , that the Streets might be well kept , If the Scavengers and Inquests respectively performed their duties herein : And therefore it is resolved , that where any of them shall be found negligent or remiss , they shall be strictly Prosecuted and Punished . And it is Recommended to the Aldermen of the several Wards , that they take particular care both with their respective Inquests and otherwise , that the Streets within their several Wards , be constantly and duly kept clean and well paved in all places ; And that all Defaulters be without fail bound over to the Sessions and there prosecuted for the same . And that the Respective Aldermen frequently with their Inquests walk the Streets for this purpose : Also that the said Aldermen take care that all the Presentments last made of any such default , in the Streets , be forthwith effectually Prosecuted . And it is ordered that the Company of Paviors take care that in paving the Streets hereafter , the Kennels ( for better convenience of passage ) be made less deep than now they are in divers places ; And the Master of the said Company to appear before this Court , and receive a Charge for that purpose : And it is ordered , That all Inhabitants within this City do altogether forbear to cast , and restrain their Servants also from casting any Soil into the Streets ; And also that they cause the Street before their respective Houses , to be frequently swept , always sweeping from the Kennel ( to prevent choaking the Common Sewers ) and gathering up the Dirt and Soil into heaps , to be the more easily carried away by the Raker . And that all the said Inhabitants keep the Streets duly Paved before their respective Houses , never raising the Street upon any new pavement : And whosoever shall be found faulty or remiss herein must expect to be Prosecuted for the same at the Sessions .
