THey that have any Friends Distracted or Melancholy are desired to accept this : and , they that have none , not to reject it : but rather to lay it by them , that they may , when they hear of any that are So , inform their Friends ; who also may be desirous to hear of one that is Faithful and Expert in these Distempers : Which , if Providence this way bring them to me , when they first fall ill , I doubt not but they will have Cause to bless God , and thank them that so happily inform'd them : Or , though it may be , after all other ways have failed , yet they may be cured by my means , which hath recovered in seven weeks time some that have been twelve years Madd , and 60 years of Age : and others that have been sixteen years Melancholy in six Months : though some kinds of this Distemper , of less continuance , in some may be dubious . I hereby seek not Applause , yet would I not be vilified : 't is not more my own than others Good I aim at ; Nor do I seek more to cure the Rich for Reward , than the Poor gratis , but I labour by all means to Cure both , rather than keep either in my House for Advantage . I mi●ht give many instances of it , but I 'le Name , and that without picking , only Four of the Parish where I now live , whereby you may judge . The first was a Woman , put to me by the Churchwardens in 1672. who was much given to Swear and Tear , having a very Soar Breast , and many other very grievious soars made by binding her in Bed with cords , though she was through weakness not able to stand without hold , yet was she and all her Soars perfectly cured in 3 Weeks . The second was a man whose D●stemper was of another kind , he being so void of Sense and Reason as not to know any thing that was said or done unto him , he would , when his hands were at liberty , most vigorously beat himself on his breast , and tear the hair off his head , & afterwards ly as in a Convulsion fit ; he had also a great swelling in his neck , which became well , and he perfectly cured in 4 Days . The third was a man put to me by the Overseers of the Poor in 1674 whose distemper varied from the other ; wherefore , because I would not say he should be K Charles II . he commanded the standers by to take off my head , for he would be K. Charles II . whether I would or not ; yet at times he would discourse rationally : he was perfectly cured in six Days . The fourth , was a woman differing from the rest , being altogether Melancholy , lame on one side , supposing her self to be more miserable than any other , and that a Plaister which a woman had applied to her forhead , was so very ponderous , that if she should but stoop to the ground , she should never be able to rise again , so would often mourn : but she also was cured in 4 Weeks . The last 10 I had went away in a short time very well , except one that was 2 , another 3 , and the third 4 Months : besides these nominated , several others have been cured in a week , or very few weeks time : yet 't is possible , others may require more time than any of these ; though all these had been under other means rather to their d triment than advantage Let those that object do the like , hereby , may that place be eased , and the 〈◇〉 Safest way of Cure made apparent . Note also , that never any was Moped by use of my means , but several that have been subject to Fits , and other bad Symptoms , have not had the like after cured by my means . The Truth of what I here affirm will easily be confirmed , if those that doubt hereof will but apply themselves to me James Newton , at my house on Clarken-well Green ; where I am ready to give an ingenious Account of my carriage to , Care and Industry on such person : with the Cures that I have , through the Assistance of the Almighty , perform'd without danger of Relapse . — Now if any Skil'd in these Distempers object any thing ; I am very willing for their satisfaction , if I may have Liberty , to take 3 persons out of Bedlam that have been there several years , and to bestow all Necessaries upon them gratis . —
